Based in Yokohama, Japan, FANCL Corporation was founded by Kenji Ikemori, a Japanese entrepreneur who has dedicated his career to developing effective skincare solutions. Mr. Ikemori envisioned a holistic approach to skincare that would include botanically-based, preservative-free products as well as oral supplements.
Fancl Corporation Company History
Mr. Kenji Ikemori, President of Fancl Corporation, founded Fancl based on his vision of a preservative-free, healthy approach to beautiful skin. In the late 1970's Mr. Ikemori's wife suffered from blotches and rashes on her face. Mr. Ikemori did not understand why traditional cosmetics, which were meant to make women look more beautiful, were actually damaging their skin. Mr. Ikemori had a vision of creating a skincare line that would actually improve skin health, not just cover up flaws. He first wanted to discover what it was that was causing irritation. Through extensive research, he discovered that the use of preservatives in commercial cosmetics products was at the root of the problem.
Envisioning a holistic approach to skincare, Mr. Ikemori worked with a chemist who helped him create the first Fancl products packaged in small ampules containing a two week supply, which he sold out of his one-man shop. Mr. Ikemori found that there was a huge demand for his preservative-free, holistic skincare products and launched Fancl Corporation in 1981. The company subsequently added beauty supplements to complement the idea of beauty from the inside out. Today, Fancl Corporation holds the enviable position as one of the largest and most successful cosmetic and supplement producers in Japan, with 2001 sales nearing $511 million.
